What do EMTs do?
At its core, an EMT provides transportation for critically injured and sick patients of all ages. Responsibilities include:
- Responding to 911 emergency calls
- Providing basic life support and first aid such as CPR and wound care
- Transporting patients to and from places such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and their homes
- Documenting patient information and care
- Communicating a patient’s condition and the treatment provided to doctors, nurses, and other healthcare team members
- Cleaning equipment and restocking supplies
- EMTs work alongside first responders from police and fire departments, as well as doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. EMS is 24/7, and shifts are typically 12 hours.
Many of our EMTs continue their careers in emergency medicine in roles, including Critical Care Paramedic, Flight Paramedic, Instructor, Supervisor, or Executive Leadership. For others, it’s an excellent pathway for different healthcare and public safety professions. And no matter where life takes you, the skills you learn as a Medstar EMT will set you up for success.
